Pompeii by Robert Harris

Quote: “What is leadership, after all, but the blind choice of one route over another and the confident pretense that the decision was based on reason” – Robert Harris

Analysis: This quote questions the definition of leadership. Apparently, leadership is determined by choice, and the author makes it clear that choices are always blind. The outcome is in the future, so for a choice to be rendered of blindness, the chooser must be able to accurately predict the future. Harris claims that since the prediction of the future is not in the realm of possibility for humans, choices are either made with a form of logical insight or not. This decision to support one’s choice with logic or reason is what Harris believes is the criteria for being a leader.
