Pompeii 2

Pompeii by Robert Harris

Quote: “But only a fool sails into combat with nature” – Robert Harris

Analysis:

Pompeii is an ancient disaster that is infamous for its devastation to an entire city. The eruption of a volcano covered the city in ash and fossilized all of the cities inhabitants. This quote captures the superiority of nature over man. Harris states that confrontation with nature is idiotic, and the people of Pompeii learned this lesson. By deciding to claim and settle the land near the volcano, they signed a legal contract with the volcano that they would never be able to escape. The day the volcano erupted, the people were trapped and were unable to avoid the volcanos devastation. This human versus nature conflict serves as an example that other nature is supreme, and that nature should be feared and respected.
